Bristol commenced as a town within the Gloucestershire facet on the Avon, but since it grew it extended throughout the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "which the town of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be separate with the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... and that it should be a county by itself".[
